A site of great historic and geological beauty, El Morro National Monument is a true adventure back in time. Take the hour hike along the Inscription Trial, where hundreds of inscriptions left by Spanish and other European travelers date back to the 17th century. In addition to these relatively modern writings, there are petroglyphs carved centuries before these lands were ever colonized by European nations. Head even farther up to the Headland Trail to see the ancient Puebloan ruin called Atsinna, which was inhabited between around 1300 and 1500 CE. Stop by the visitor center, which contains informative exhibits on both the land and the people that once occupied it. A small campground offers limited room for guests to stay overnight, and it's about three hours by car to Albuquerque, past El Malpais National Monument.
